What is the Public Domain?

Works created by the Government are in the public domain. For example images and content from NASA, The National Library of Medicine, Pamphlets created by the National Parks system, economic reports published by the GPO, are just a few examples of content that may be used.

What is Openly Licensed Media (aka: Creative Commons Media)?

Media = images, videos, drawings, audio, music, etc.

Openly licensed= A license that allows the creator to both maintain copyright and to give others permission to use their works without fear of copyright infringement.

These licenses come from an organization called Creative Commons. Creative Commons provides a system of licenses that allows the creators to determine exactly how they want their content to be used.
